UK Tech Sector Monthly Monitor – June 2026 update
In this Growth Commission paper in May 2026, Growth Commissioner Douglas McWilliams set out the critical contribution to the economy of the UK’s tech sector and shared his first piece of monthly analysis of that sector’s contribution to economic growth.
Today we publish this note with the latest update of his analysis.
Following the publication of the UK GDP figures for the three months to April 2026, he observes:
“Today’s data shows that the UK economy is growing only sluggishly with GVA in the three months to April up only 1.1% on a year earlier. Of that growth, more than a quarter comes directly from the tech sector alone with the sector up 4.8% on a year earlier compared with 4.2% for the year to March. Without the tech sector the UK economy’s performance would be even sadder.
“The UK tech sector is at risk if the EU reset causes EU regulation, which has already knocked back the EU tech sector, to be applied to the UK.”
